• Lateral humeral condylar fracture in a pup

We see loads of these cases at West Midlands Referrals, especially in Springer Spaniels and also in French Bulldogs, in increasing numbers as this breed is becoming more popular.

These fractures of the lower part of the humerus as usually reasonably straightforward to fix. In young dogs, we use a screw and pins; in older dogs, a plate is required.

Cage confinement post-op is invariably required while the bone heals, and jumping down should be prevented.

Pins occasionally need removing once the fracture has headed  -they sometimes loosen and migrate.

The fracture involves the joint, so some long-term degenerative joint disease (DJD) is inevitable.
