• West Midlands Veterinary Referrals Services

Our service covers orthopaedics, soft tissue and spinal surgery, and from 2015 we added ultrasonography and selected medicine cases. We offer advanced imaging with 64-slice CT and ultrasonography with a Doppler machine.

For many surgical cases we can provide a surgeon to come to your premises with all of the appropriate instrumentation, implants and equipment to carry out procedures for your clients. This can typically be done at just a few days notice. Cases that are commonly done on a mobile basis include cruciate and patella surgeries, arthrodeses, some fracture fixations (waiting time permitting), and perineal hernia and ear surgeries. Unfortunately arthroscopy is not available on a mobile basis because of the problem of transporting the bulky and fragile equipment.

surgeryFor surgical cases, post operative care can be managed at our Burton on Trent surgery or through your own hospital as you prefer. In either case we provide support (including out of normal hours) using the aid of modern information technology.

We typically ask to see cases back at 2-3 weeks and again at 2 months post-operatively for check ups and for follow up radiography where this is indicated. We make no further charges for follow up consultation or radiography at our Burton on Trent premises.

We offer a free radiographic interpretation and case history review service. You can e-mail or post your radiographs, and/or just ring for a chat, and that includes out of hours. If you want standard radiographs returning promptly by post, please include return postage for the return of the films. Otherwise we will return them in the care of the next client of yours that we see. Many practices now send digital images of radiographs for a high-speed reply and to avoid the hassle of postage. We prefer JPegs for ease of opening. If you use analogue radiographs, consider taking photos of them with a smart phone and emailing the images that way (Top tip: turn off the ceiling strip lights and disable the flash on the phone/camera!).

For selected surgical cases we can call on specialist visiting surgeons.

For selected oncology cases we employ advice from an internationally recognised medical oncology specialist (http://www.chemopet.co.uk/) to complement our surgical service. Some surgical oncology cases are also treated with chemotherapeutic agents. These may be administered via the home practice or by ourselves, as appropriate.

We can accept ultrasound and medical cases, albeit with some limitations on dates available. Acute/critical cases that might need ITU care are less likely to be suited to this service. If you would like cases reviewed by our medical colleagues, please send case notes, X-rays and laboratory reports by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. We can decide whether the case might be suitable to be seen through West Midlands Referrals for clinical examination and for the formulation of an investigative and therapeutic plan.
